Aiken native Matt Hendrix leads event

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Aiken native Matt Hendrix shot a career-best 9-under-par 63 on Thursday to take the lead after the first round of the Tour’s Price Cutter Charity Championship at Highland Springs Country Club.

“It (the hole) never looks bigger than it actually is but when I’m putting well like today, at times it doesn’t matter what line I choose, I know they’re both right. It’s always been good but never overly great and today was great,” said Hendrix, a former South Aiken and Clemson standout. “Out here with weeks like this, you’ve got to go full throttle. You’ve got to aim at every pin.”

Hendrix, who started on No. 10, birdied Nos. 11, 12, 13 to make the turn 3-under. He then eagled No. 1 and birdied 2, 3, 5 and 8.

James Nitties and Doug Barron are one back in second.

Augusta’s Scott Parel shot 67 and is tied for 24th.

LPGA TOUR: In Sylvania, Ohio, it was unofficially international day at the Jamie Farr Toledo Classic.

The leaderboard might not have had many household names after the first round Thursday, but the leader and her closest pursuers included players representing Sweden, France, Japan, South Korea, Thailand and the United States.

Pernilla Lindberg holed birdie putts of 40 and 50 feet and added three 25-footers in a round of 7-under-
par 64 to take a two-shot lead after the opening round at Highland Meadows Golf Club.

Texan Angela Stanford was two strokes back along with Japan’s Mika Miyazato, South Korea’s Chella Choi, Louisiana State University grad Meredith Duncan, rookie Numa Gulyanamitta, of Thailand, and France’s Karine Icher.

The 2008 champ, Paula Creamer, had 68, as Stacy Lewis, the LPGA money leader. Defending champ Na Yeon Choi shot 71.
