Two share lead in Puerto Rico

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico — Matt Jones and George McNeill topped the leaderboard at 6-under-par 66 on Thursday in the PGA Tour’s windy Puerto Rico Open.

Former British Open champion Ben Curtis was a stroke back at Trump International Golf Club-Puerto Rico, and Jeff Overton, Todd Hamilton, Aiken’s Kevin Kisner and Daniel Summerhays followed at 68.

Japanese star Ryo Ishikawa, playing the event for the first time after failing to qualify for the World Golf Championship event at Doral, shot 70.

Michael Bradley, the winner in 2009 and 2011, opened with a 72.

NATIONWIDE TOUR: In Santiago, Chile, Augusta’s Scott Parel shot 7-under par 65 and shares the first-round lead of the Chile Classic with James Nitties.

Parel had six birdies, an eagle and a bogey on Prince of Wales Country Club’s 6,711 yard layout. He started on the 10th tee and shot 31, which included his eagle on No. 18.

Nitties played a bogey-free round with seven birdies.

Aiken’s Matt Hendrix labored through his round, shooting 2-over 74.

LYLE’S LEUKEMIA: Jarrod Lyle has had a recurrence of leukemia, just as the 30-year-old is preparing to become a father for the first time.

Robert Allenby supports a cancer program in Australia where Lyle once was a patient. Allenby says he received word Thursday morning that Lyle had a recurrence and is to start chemotherapy as soon as possible. Allenby says Lyle’s wife was due to deliver their first child in a few weeks, but she was being induced immediately.

This is Lyle’s fifth year on the PGA Tour. Three weeks ago, he tied for fifth at Riviera.

TRUMP’S BIG PLANS: Donald Trump has monster plans for his purchase of the Doral Golf Resort.

Trump bought the famous golf resort outside Miami for $150 million and said Thursday he plans to invest more than $200 million to revamp the Blue Monster championship course and stop at nothing to make Doral the ultimate golf destination.

“It’s a tremendous location, 800 acres right smack in the middle of Miami, and we look to make this one of the great places anywhere in the world for golf,” Trump said Thursday.

The sale is to close June 1.
