Augusta area courses gear up for busy Monday with prep tournaments

In a local hotel room, what Wade Marchman called his “war room,” the planning already has taken place for the largest Georgia high school golf event in one city.

On Monday, the Augusta area will play host to the Georgia High School Association’s golf championships. For the first time, 14 classes will hold championships at 11 golf courses in one location.

In 2012, Augusta became the first Georgia city to hold every GHSA golf championship, but there were only 12 classes then. Now, 1,100 golfers will compete in Monday’s 18-hole event.

Marchman, who served as the tournament director in 2012 and will do so again, set up Thursday in his hotel room with a handful of staff members preparing for the tournament. Together, they put together tedious items like tee times and scoring sheets.

With a small army of local golf pros and volunteers helping out, everything should be ready when players tee off at 8 a.m. Monday. So Marchman, who also serves as Burke County High School’s athletic director and girls golf coach, will be at Waynesboro Country Club when the action begins.

“I’m going to be with my girls,” said Marchman, whose team is competing for the Class AAAA title.

Marchman, who said he’ll have his cell phone with him all day, said logistics are taken care of at the respective courses. Head pros help run the tournaments at their course, with more than 10 volunteers helping at every site.

“If you’ve got local pros willing to help out, that’s big. They all stay in and have people who want to help them run their tournament,” Marchman said. “That’s why we’re able to have this here in Augusta.”

Burke County is seeking its first state title in any girls sport. Other local teams competing include the Lincoln County boys at Forest Hills Golf Club (Class A), Westside boys at Applewood Golf Course (Class AA), Thomson boys at Belle Meade Country Club (Class AAA), Richmond Academy boys at West Lake Country Club (Class AAAA), Richmond Academy girls at Waynesboro Country Club (Class AAAA) and Greenbrier and Lakeside boys at Bartram Trail Golf Club (Class AAAAA). Local players competing as individuals include Laney Aycock of Lincoln County (Class A girls), William Hamilton of Davidson (Class AA boys), Majorie Bryant of Davidson (Class AA girls), Dalton Quick of Burke County (Class AAAA boys) and Megan Sabol of Lakeside (Class AAAAA girls).

Most classes will feature 16 teams competing for a state title (the Class AAAAAA girls has 17 teams). In Class A, eight teams will compete in the respective public and private divisions.

In Class A, the top four area champions qualified for the tournament, along with four more teams through the state sectionals. In Class AA-AAAAAA, all the region champions who met a certain qualifying score advance to the state championship, along with eight to 10 teams out of the state sectionals.

In Monday’s state championship, up to six boys will play for every team, with the low four scores counting. In the girls’ competition, up to four will play for every team with the low three counting – in Class A and AA only the low two scorers count.
