Sigg ends up 2nd in Georgia Junior

In Albany, Ga., Augusta’s Greyson Sigg shot a final-round 68 on Wednesday to finish second in the 47th annual Georgia Junior Championship at Doublegate Country Club.

Sigg, the 2011 champion, concluded the 54-hole event at 6-under-par 210, five strokes behind winner Andy Shim, of Duluth. Shim closed with 70.

“There were a lot of really good players out here, so it was tough. It just feels really awesome,” Shim said.

Emmanuel Kountakis, of Martinez, shot 72 and finished third at 215. He was followed by Adam Wright, of Marietta, at 216; Brandon Lee, of Alpharetta; Harry Lambert, of Suwanee; Christopher Guglielmo, of Cumming; and Tye Waller, of Griffin;, all at 217; Jack Larkin Jr., of Atlanta at 218; and Jacob Joiner, of Albany, and Tyler Young, of Kennesaw, who rounded out the top 10 at 219.

Carson Spears, of Augusta, tied for 20th at 224 after closing with 79. Carter Mobley, of Evans, shot 75 and tied for 29th at 226; Samuel Odi, of Martinez, had 79 and tied for 50th at 232; and David Hemann, of Evans, shot 84 and finished 66th at 238.

The top eight finishers automatically qualify for the Georgia-South Carolina Junior Challenge Match later this summer. Shim, Sigg, Kountakis, Wright, Lee, Lambert, Guglielmo and Waller made the Georgia team. Larkin Jr. and Joiner are the first and second alternates, respectively.

• In Buford, Ga., Evans’ Eunice Yi shot a final-round 78 to finish tied for eighth in the Georgia State Golf Association’s Girls Championship at Legacy on Lake Lanier Golf Club.

Yi completed the 54-hole event at 15-over-par 231, 15 shots behind winner Rachel Dai, of Milton. Dai closed with 73 and won by seven shots.

Megan Sabol, of Martinez, shot 81 and finished 18th at 241.

• In Gordonsville, Va., Aiken’s Alex Hamilton shot even-par 71 and is tied for 44th place after the first round of the eGolf Professional Tour’s Spring Creek Classic at Spring Creek Golf Club.

Travis Ross, of Crookston, Minn., and Adam Mitchell, of Atlanta, and Zack Schnurr, of Canada, share the lead after shooting 65s.

Augusta’s Rob Bennett and former USC Aiken golfer Scott Usher opened with 77s.



Pacers release hoops schedule

USC Aiken men’s basketball coach Vince Alexander unveiled his 2012-2013 schedule on Wednesday.

It features 14 regular-season home games, including the season opener Nov. 13 against Voorhees.

The Pacers will play at Augusta State on Feb. 2 and play host to the Jaguars on Senior Night on Feb. 27.

• Augusta State had 97 student-athletes named to the 2012 Peach Belt Conference Presidential Honor Roll, up from 78 in 2011.

The Presidential Honor Roll recognizes all student-athletes at conference institutions who had a GPA of 3.0 or higher for the academic year.

• Armstrong Atlantic State senior and Augusta native Matt Motes earned NCAA Division II honorable mention All-American honors from the Golf Coaches Association of America.

Motes is the ninth Armstrong men’s golfer to earn All-America honors since the reinstatement of the Pirate program in 2000-01.

He posted a team-best 72.93 stroke average in 30 rounds this season, earning All-Peach Belt Conference honors while ranking sixth in the league in stroke average. He recorded five top-10 finishes and finished ninth at the NCAA South/Southeast Regional.
