Texan Scottie Scheffler couldn't wait to make final putt to win Junior Invitational at Sage Valley

Scottie Scheffler straightens the "Sage Valley gold" jacket awarded to him after winning the Junior Invitational at the Graniteville golf club. Tom Wyatt presented Scheffler with the trophy after Bob Jones IV gave him the coat.

GRANITEVILLE — Perhaps Scottie Scheffler won’t be in such a rush the next time he wins a big golf tournament.

Scheffler, a 17-year-old from Dallas, had two putts to win the Junior Invitational at Sage Valley on Saturday. A stellar approach on the final hole left him just a few feet away from the cup.

When it was his turn to putt, Scheffler just missed his birdie try then tapped in for the winning putt.

In the professional ranks, it is customary for the winning golfer to mark his ball and then wait for the others in his group to putt out.

“I was just trying to lag it up there,” said Scheffler, who celebrated with a handshake and a hug from his caddie. “I didn’t want to three-putt.”

The fourth annual Junior Invitational, which was presented by Electrolux, featured 54 of the world’s best junior golfers. Scheffler lived up to his No. 1 junior ranking as he shot 71 in the final round and finished with a 54-hole total of 5-under-par 211 at the demanding Sage Valley layout.

He received a “Sage Valley gold” blazer from Bob Jones IV, a grandson of legendary amateur Bobby Jones, and he was presented a smaller version of the Gibbs Trophy that goes to the winner.

Runner-up Cameron Champ, of Sacramento, Calif., didn’t leave empty-
handed. He received the Paul S. Simon Character Award for his actions off the course, which included conducting a clinic at The First Tee of Aiken.

“He does so much for other folks,” Sage Valley president and tournament chairman Tom Wyatt said.
