Craig Thompson put name in record books with Augusta Futurity repeat

After winning the Futurity Open finals Saturday night, Craig Thompson discussed which of the goodies he was going to split with owners Patrick and Laura Collins.

While the Collins family discussed keeping the stirrups, Thompson said he was keeping the heavy championship trophy.

“This is what I really want,” he said.

Thompson and Mc Im With The Band marked 223.5, giving the Buffalo, Texas, rider his second consecutive Futurity Open victory. He became just the third rider in the 34-year history of the Augusta Futurity to win back-to-back Futurity Open titles, joining Larry Reeder (1984-85) and Buster Welch (1987-88).

Thompson became the second competitor at this year’s show to repeat as champion. Libby Bowman also captured her second title with Rich N Snazzy in the $100,000 Amateur for 5/6-Year-Olds event.

Harris Shepard added to his family’s legacy, claiming the Futurity Non-Pro title aboard Especially Thomas. Along with his older brother, Austin, and father, Sam, Harris helped add to the family’s Augusta Futurity total of seven titles.

Kathy Boone and Playin Witha Cat posted the highest score of the show with 226 to win the Mercuria NCHA World Series of Cutting Non-Pro championship. Trainer Ed Dufurrena won his first Augusta title with 222 in the Mercuria Open finals.

John Wold and Fort Worth Pipeline posted 225 to win the Classic Open finals. In the Classic Non-Pro finals, Jason McClure and Freckles Meow defeated Chisholm Clark and Jesse Woodson James in a workoff.

In the amateur events, Bill Wilkins and Smart Little Cranbar claimed the $35,000 Non-Pro title, while Gerda Williams and Bob Somebody won the $50,000 Amateur Any Age event. Alexis Stephas and Once You Go Black won the $100,000 Amateur for 4-Year-Olds title.

Clark and Anna Kate Jackson tied for first in the Area 18 Youth Scholarship Cutting, a companion event to the Augusta Futurity. They split the top prize, each winning a $2,500 scholarship.
