The city of Atlanta said Thursday it will bid for college football’s 2018 national championship game, which would be held in its new downtown retractable roof stadium.
Construction on the stadium is scheduled to begin shortly after deals were reached with two historic churches that must be moved. It will open in the spring of 2017.
The Chick-fil-A Bowl is one of six bowls that will rotate as sites of the national semifinal games under the new playoff system, which begins with the 2014 season.
SOUTH CAROLINA: With all of the foot injuries that have hit No. 12 South Carolina it has been difficult at times for defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward to prepare for undefeated Central Florida.
All-American defensive end Jadeveon Clowney is playing with bone spurs in his right foot, an injury he’s had since high school. The Gamecocks other defensive end, Chaz Sutton, has a mid-foot sprain that routinely flare up.
“We’ve had a lot of foot injuries this year, that’s more than normal,” Ward said.
The two spent much of South Carolina’s bye week getting treatment and not irritating their injuries so they’ll be full-speed when the 12th-ranked Gamecocks (2-1) take on the Knights (3-0) on Saturday in Orlando, Fla.
ARKANSAS: Coach Bret Bielema says quarterback Brandon Allen remains questionable for Saturday’s game against Texas A&M.
Allen injured his throwing shoulder two weeks ago against Southern Mississippi and missed last week’s loss to Rutgers.
