UConn's champs to be honored during parade

Connecticut guard Brianna Banks holds the championship trophy as players celebrate winning the NCAA national title.

The state of Connecticut is not done celebrating UConn’s national championship.

A parade has been scheduled for Sunday in Hartford to honor the women’s basketball team.

The Huskies beat Louisville 93-60 on Tuesday to earn the program’s eighth NCAA title, tying Tennessee for the most ever in women’s college basketball.

President Obama has congratulated coach Geno Auriemma and the Huskies on winning the title.

During a telephone call Wednesday, Obama commended the Huskies for their extraordinary season and their run in the tournament.

Obama said he looks forward to honoring the team at the White House.

LOUISVILLE: Men’s coach Rick Pitino said junior guard Russ Smith hasn’t made up his mind about going pro although the player’s father said earlier this week that his son was leaving school early to enter the NBA Draft.

“Russ, I think, is 50-50,” Pitino told Sports Radio 790 in Louisville, Ky., on Thursday. “He’s a very confused young man in terms of his decision right now. He didn’t want his dad to say that about him coming out. He wanted time to think of it.”

FURMAN: Hired Colorado State assistant Niko Medved as its new men’s basketball coach. Medved spent the past six years at Colorado State.

He was previously at Furman for seven seasons under Larry Davis. When Davis resigned in April 2006, Medved was the Paladins’ interim coach for almost three weeks until Jeff Jackson was hired. Jackson resigned in March after having just one winning season.

SOUTHERN CAL: Hall of Famer Cynthia Cooper-Dyke is returning to the school as the Trojans’ head women’s basketball coach.

She replaces Michael Cooper, who quit in March after four seasons.

The Trojans finished 11-20 in the fourth year for Cooper, who resigned March 13. Cooper went 72-57 with the Trojans, who never reached the NCAA Tournament under the former Lakers guard.
