Lincoln Memorial slips past UNC Pembroke

AIKEN — After committing a turnover in the final minute of last year’s season-ending loss to Montevallo, Lincoln Memorial’s Lorenza Ross came through Saturday.


Ross hit a baseline runner with 4.3 seconds remaining to lift the second-seeded Railsplitters to an 82-80 win over No. 7 seed UNC Pembroke in the first round of the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional.

“I feel like I got the monkey off my back after last year,” said Ross, who scored a team-high 20 points.

The Railsplitters (25-5) advance to play Barton in the regional semifinals at 5 p.m. toay.

Lincoln Memorial shot 19 of 27 from the floor in the second half (70 percent). Ross shot 10 for 15 from the field for 20 points.

Shahmel Brackett made four 3-pointers en route to a game-high 27 points to lead UNC Pembroke. George Blakeney added 14 points and 10 rebounds.


Gerald McNair scored a game-high 34 points to pace the Bulldogs.

Barton led by two when Gerald Boston swished a 3-pointer with 1:54 remaining to extend the lead.

Troran Brown led Montevallo with 26 points. Drico Hightower, of Augusta, posted six points and three boards.


The Bulldogs closed the game on a 7-0 run to advance to play host USC Aiken in the second round at 7:30 tonight. Wingate (22-8) tied the game on an Ethan Kincaid jump shot with 1:19 remaining. The Bulldogs closed with five free throws in the final 70 seconds.

The Saints (21-9) missed their final five shots, shooting 33 percent from the field in the second half.
