Georgia football coach Mark Richt might have hip replacement surgery

Georgia football coach Mark Richt might undergo hip-replacement surgery to alleviate worsening pain, but he said Wednesday he would delay having it until after securing what’s expected to be a large recruiting class this February.

Doctors told Richt he probably needs to have the replacement surgery.

“I don’t want it to affect other joints in my body, so I’m thinking it’s about time to do it,” Richt said.

• Offensive right guard Chris Burnette hasn’t practiced this week because of a left shoulder injury, but Richt isn’t ruling him out for Saturday.

“There’s a good chance he’ll still travel with us and possibly be ready,” Richt said. “Just don’t know.”

WISCONSIN: The Badgers will finish the season with a new starting quarterback.Coach Bret Bielema prefers to keep quiet about who it will be.

Danny O’Brien, a junior, and fifth-year senior Curt Phillips are listed as co-starters on the depth chart.

O’Brien or Phillips will replace redshirt freshman Joel Stave, a six-game starter, who broke his left collarbone in the third quarter of Wisconsin’s 16-13 overtime loss against Michigan State on Oct. 27.

PENN STATE: Former president Graham Spanier was arraigned and released on bail at a brief court appearance Wednesday on charges he lied about and concealed child sex abuse allegations involving former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky.

Spanier signed paperwork after his bail was set at $125,000, but he was not required to post any of that amount. He was ordered to forfeit his passport and be fingerprinted. He didn’t enter a plea.

MORGAN STATE: The football game between Morgan State and Hampton scheduled to be played at Yankee Stadium on Nov. 17 has been moved to Morgan State’s Baltimore campus.

The New York Urban League, which sponsored the game, and the Yankees made the announcement Wednesday, citing relief and recovery efforts still going on in the New York because of Superstorm Sandy.
