Georgia Southern can inch closer to Southern Conference title with win

Jeff Monken has a bold streak.

Two years ago before a game with Chattanooga, the Georgia Southern head coach asked Mocs coach Russ Huesman if he could recruit his son, Jacob Huesman.

(Russ Huesman) said, ‘No way. Nobody in this league is recruiting my kid but me,’” Monken said, laughing as he recalled the story after practice this week.

Monken hopes the one that got away doesn’t do in the second-ranked Eagles tonight.

Georgia Southern and Chattanooga are the only two teams in control of their own destiny in pursuit of a Southern Conference championship and the league’s automatic bid to the FCS playoffs.

The Eagles (6-1, 5-1 SoCon) can capture at least a share of their second consecutive conference crown and 10th overall with a win and a Wofford loss to The Citadel today.

NORTH CAROLINA: The university released documents outlining violations by football players for receiving improper benefits as part of a settlement to end a public-records fight over information from an NCAA investigation into the program.

The university also paid $45,000 in legal fees to media outlets, including The Associated Press, as part of the settlement.

The university said it had provided everything it could without violating federal privacy laws. A judge ruled in August that academic-misconduct violations were protected, but that improper-benefits violations weren’t covered.

The school will release additional documents Nov. 5.

PLAYOFF SYSTEM: Big East Commissioner Mike Aresco says support for adding a bowl game to college football’s new postseason system has not waned.

Earlier this week, reported the chances of a seventh game being added to the playoff rotation that starts in 2014 had decreased because of various concerns, ranging from the value of the game’s television rights to where it will be played.

The original playoff plan had the national semifinals rotating among six major bowl games. In September, conference commissioners discussed expanding to the pool to seven games to give better access to the Big East, Mountain West, Conference USA , Sun Belt and Mid-American Conference.

“None of us had heard anything about the game being in any jeopardy,” Aresco said Friday.
