Ohio State's Meyer kicks two players off team

New Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer dismissed two players for off-the-field problems.

Ohio State spokesman Jerry Emig confirmed Sunday that defensive backs Dominic Clarke and DerJuan Gambrell have been released from their scholarships.

Clarke, a redshirt sophomore from Frederick, Md., has been charged with drunken driving and also had been arrested on a charge of disorderly conduct after allegedly discharging a BB gun on campus. No one was hurt in the latter incident.

Gambrell, a freshman from Toledo, was also discharged for a “violation of team rules,” but Ohio State did not specify what that violation was.

AUBURN: Quarterback Barrett Trotter will not be coming back for his senior season.

The seven-game starter announced his decision Monday, but isn’t planning to transfer. Trotter lost his starting job late in the season but relieved an injured Clint Moseley in the Chick-fil-A Bowl with perhaps his best performance.

He wound up passing for 175 yards and rushing for 32 in the win over Virginia.

Trotter passed for 1,184 yards and 11 touchdowns as a junior and was intercepted six times. He didn’t log any significant playing time before last season.

MIAMI: Boosters may no longer provide occasional meals for the university’s athletes or host them at their homes, even though those acts are typically allowed by the NCAA.

The school’s compliance office announced the changes in a newsletter distributed Monday, a copy of which was obtained by The Associated Press.

In August, former Miami booster Nevin Shapiro told Yahoo! Sports that he provided extra benefits to 72 Hurricanes football players and recruits from 2002 through 2010. He said some of those benefits included meals and entertainment at his homes.

IOWA: A.J. Derby is leaving the program after a season in which coach Kirk Ferentz moved him to defense from quarterback.

The school said Monday that Derby had been granted a release.
