Paine’s women got off to a slow start Thursday night, and it cost them.
The Lady Lions struggled against Fort Valley State’s press and fell, 70-51, at Richmond Academy.
Paine (3-9, 3-5) dropped its sixth game in its past seven contests. The Lady Lions shot 32 percent from the field and committed 41 turnovers against the Lady Wildcats.
Fort Valley State jumped all over Paine at the beginning, bolting to a 23-5 lead. The Lady Lions couldn’t handle the press and posted almost as many turnovers (23) as field goals attempted in the first half (24).
Though Paine outscored Fort Valley State, 32-30, in the second half, the damage already was done. The Lady Wildcats led 40-19 at halftime.
Quandra Rodgers shot 7 for 14 from the field for 17 points to lead the Lady Lions. BreAsia Burns chipped in with 11 points and seven rebounds.
Jasmine Birdsong led Fort Valley State with 13 points and 15 boards. Yasheeka Jones added 14 points, eight steals and five assists.
The Lady Wildcats (9-4, 7-2) dominated the glass, 53-30, to overcome a poor shooting night (39 percent) and 31 turnovers.
