Pacers ranked No. 1 in Southeast Regional

Rival Augusta State falls to eighth

On the eve of their journey to Columbus, Ga. for the Peach Belt Conference tournament, the USC Aiken men’s basketball team got a bit of expected good news.

The Pacers were ranked No. 1 in the latest NCAA Division II Southeast Regional poll released this afternoon. Previously ranked second, they moved up to grab the top spot, while rival Augusta State fell to No. 8.

USC Aiken coach Vince Alexander, named the conference’s coach of the year earlier this week, said Tuesday he expected the No. 1 ranking. The key for the Pacers will be holding onto that spot through the conference tournament. The top-ranked team in the regional’s final poll next week will earn the right to play host to the first three rounds of the Southeast Regional tournament.

““That’s a goal of ours,” Alexander said. “We have to go in there and win the (conference) tournament. If we go in there and win it, we’ll be in great shape.”

The Lady Pacers, ranked No. 9 nationally, remained at No. 2 in the latest women’s regional poll behind conference rival Clayton State.
