USC Aiken won title behind Vince Alexander

Vince Alexander. Linsanity? How about Vinsanity? The USC Aiken coach, who deserves to win Peach Belt Conference Coach of the Year honors, guided his team to a late comeback over Francis Marion on Wednesday. The Pacers, the conference champions, are in the driver’s seat in the Southeast Region. If USC Aiken holds the regional on its home floor, it likely will make its first trip to the Division II Elite Eight.

Georgia College women. The Lady Bobcats went from winning the conference tournament last season to finishing last in the West Division this season.

During today’s Senior Day games at Richmond Academy, Paine College will be raising funds for the United Way of the CSRA.

The Augusta State men will be seeded anywhere from second to fourth in the Peach Belt Tournament. A Jaguar win tonight in Savannah, Ga., ensures the team no worse than a No. 3 seed. UNC Pembroke holds the tiebreaker with Augusta State and will finish second in the East Division with a win over Lander. Should the Bearcats win, the Jaguars will climb to second with a win or fall to fourth with a loss.

Augusta State (15-10, 11-6): Twelve of the Jaguars’ 25 games have been decided by six or fewer points.

Paine (13-12, 12-11): A win today ensures a winning season, a major step for the Lions.

USC Aiken (19-6, 13-4): Hard to think there’s another player in the conference who plays with as much heart as guard Sterling Council, who scored 20 of his 33 points Wednesday in the final 2:42 of regulation and in the two overtimes.

Augusta State (11-14, 6-11): The Lady Jaguars can qualify for the Peach Belt Tournament with a win today.

Paine (5-20, 5-16): Quandra Rodgers leads the team with 55 3-pointers and a 12.4 scoring average.

USC Aiken (22-3, 15-2): Lady Pacers have a shot at winning the region with a win today and by claiming the conference tournament.
