Aiken Tech to drop athletic programs

Knights will play through end of semester

Aiken Tech announced today it is discontinuing its athletics program at the end of the semester.

The Knights played men’s basketball and women’s softball in the National Junior College Athletic Association. The school cited the decision to eliminate the programs as a “result of declining resources that have traditionally been available to two-year colleges,” according to a press release.

“We are proud to have provided our students the opportunity to compete in intercollegiate athletics while pursuing their academic goals, and we have consistently been impressed with their successes,” Aiken Tech athletic director and dean of student development Dr. Vinson Burdette said in the release. “The decision to discontinue the athletics programs was a difficult one, but we believe it is the right choice in order to best serve the entire student population and fulfill the college’s mission.”

The basketball program began in 1991. The softball program started in 2004.
