Eunice Yi is looking forward to playing in her first college golf tournament today.
The former Lakeside High School star is one of three freshmen who will tee it up for the Georgia Regents University women in the Minnesota Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn.
“A college event – I’m just excited to see how it is,” said Yi, who won the Georgia High School Association Class AAAAA title in May. “I’m anxious.”
The Lady Jaguars open their season today in the first of four fall events. The Minnesota Invitational runs through Tuesday.
GRU failed to qualify for postseason last season, but third-year coach Kory Thompson said she likes what she’s seen so far this preseason. Thompson added four new players to the roster, and freshmen Yi, Jessica Haigwood and Josefine Nyquist – playing in the team’s Nos. 2, 3 and 4 spots, respectively – will start the first two events at minimum.
“The freshmen have been coming on strong,” Thompson said. “They’ve been posting some really good scores. It’s good, because it pushes Casey (Kennedy) and everyone.
“I’m super excited about this year. These are by far the best qualifying scores we’ve had as a whole since I’ve been here. Every day I’ve got a girl or two under par. That’s exciting to see.”
The Lady Jaguars are led by senior Casey Kennedy, who recorded seven top-20 finishes and advanced as an individual to the NCAA Regional last season. Kennedy, who owns three career titles, said her goals this season are to win an event and finish among the nation’s top 50 golfers.
“I just want to play my best,” Kennedy said.
Sophomore Stephanie Bennett rounds out the lineup. Bennett, a former Greenbrier star, posted one top-20 showing in seven events last season.
Teresa Caballer Hernani, a sophomore transfer from Lander, is ineligible until next fall because of an NCAA graduation issue. The Spaniard earned co-Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year honors last season at Lander.
