Augusta State Lady Jaguars match school history in win over Georgia College and State

Augusta State Women 50, Georgia College and State 31

The Augusta State Lady Jaguars matched school history with one of their most dominating wins of the season.

After a tight first half, Augusta State blew past Georgia College and State in the second half en route to a 50-31 win Monday at Christenberry Fieldhouse.

With the win, Augusta State (12-2, 6-2 PBC) matched their best start in school history and went to 12-2 for only the second time ever, matching the 2003-2004 team.

“It’s a great accomplishment,” coach Nate Teymer said. “We just have to concentrate on getting better and the record takes care of itself.”

Also with the win, Augusta State moved into a tie with USC Aiken for first in the Peach Belt Conference East Division. The No. 3 Lady Pacers lost to North Georgia on Monday.

Brittany White and Becky Newhouse each scored 12 points to lead the Lady Jaguars, who shot 40 percent as a team, including making six 3-pointers.

The Lady Jaguars also forced 27 turnovers by Georgia College (9-6, 5-3 PBC), leading Augusta State to a 27-10 advantage in the second half.

“Defensive pressure really stepped up after they put pressure on us early,” Teymer said. “We forced a lot of turnovers in the second half, and the defense helped the offense.”

White made consecutive 3-pointers early in the second half that set the tone, and Augusta State was quickly up by double digits within the first 10 minutes of the second half. The Lady Jaguars reached their largest lead with 7:39 to go, leading by 19, and ended the game with the same margin.

Newhouse set personal season highs in 3-pointers and points in the first half alone. She surpassed her season 3-point total with three in the half and ended with that total. Her nine points in the first half was one more than her previous season high for a game.

“I got in a groove early and fed off it,” she said. “I felt focused. Coach tells us to play like it’s our last game, and we took it to heart tonight. It was a good conference win.”
