Lady Jaguars come back to top Pirates

With his team down eight and looking sluggish, Augusta State women’s coach Nate Teymer remembered back to the 2012 season.

Last January, the Lady Jaguars got off to a slow start, fell down big and lost at home to Armstrong Atlantic State. This time, Teymer called a timeout, determined not to let it happen again.

“We came out 75 to 80 percent,” Teymer said. “Same thing happened last year when we fell down 23 in the first half to Armstrong.”

Brittany White and Tanchelle Hollingsworth combined for 31 points Saturday as Augusta State bounced back to knock off the Pirate women, 75-70, at Christenberry Fieldhouse.

“It took us a minute, but we picked it up,” Hollingsworth said. “We didn’t want to lose on our home court.”

Augusta State improved to 9-2 overall, 3-2 in conference play. The Lady Jaguars, 6-0 at home this season, snapped a two-game skid to remain in second place in the Peach Belt Conference East Division.

“This win’s a great confidence-builder,” Teymer said. ‘We need to start worrying about our opponents instead of fixing things.”

Augusta State played its second game without leading scorer Jemimah Ashby, who recently underwent a knee “scope,” Teymer said. Ashby is expected to be out the next three weeks to six weeks.

With Ashby out, White scored a team-high 16 points, while Hollingsworth added 15. Taylor Ayers added 13 points off the bench.

“When ‘J’ went down, we needed to get scoring from other players,” Teymer said. “We’re going to need some consistency from Tanchelle and Taylor. Then, we’re going to need that third, fourth and fifth scorer.”

Armstrong Atlantic State (6-7, 1-5) scored the game’s first eight points, but White drilled a 3-pointer from the left wing to give Augusta State its first lead at 21-20.

The Lady Jaguars held the Pirate women to 36 percent in the second half. Tori Klewicki-McNutt led Armstrong Atlantic State with a game-high 24 points.
