Jaguars' comeback falls short at Valdosta State

VALDOSTA, Ga. – Drew Maynard scored 16 points and Tristan Steele and Chris Rozier added 12 each as Valdosta State held off Augusta State 60-56 Wednesday night in a nonconference basketball game.

Valdosta State (3-2) shot 46.7 percent from the field and used a season-high 10 blocked shots to overcome 15 turnovers. Augusta State (2-2) shot only 30.8 percent from the field.
Former Laney standout Harold Doby was the only Jaguar in double figures with 13 points. He also had a team-high nine rebounds.

Valdosta State led by 10 at the half and extended it to 53-35 on a 3-pointer by Steele with 7:49 to play before Augusta State stormed back, using a 19-3 run to close to within two with 2:15 to play.

Tye Beal sparked the run, scoring nine points by hitting four free throws and two field goals, including a 3-pointer.

Michael Panaggio ended a scoreless drought for Valdosta State with a jumper in the lane with 1:58 to left, but Doby answered with a putback basket for Augusta State before a turnover gave the Jaguars the ball and a chance to tie it. But O'Neal Armstrong missed a 3-pointer and a jumper before the Blazers grabbed a rebound with 36.5 seconds left.
The Jaguars had two more chances to tie it, but Josh Sparks recorded his sixth block of the night on an Armstrong attempt and altered a shot by Devonte Thomas before grabbing the rebound.
Panaggio sealed the victory with two free throws with 1.4 seconds left.
