Georgia Regents takes two games

In St. Augustine, Fla., Georgia Regents beat Flagler 4-2 in the completion of a game that was suspended Saturday, then defeated the Saints 7-2 in Sunday’s regularly-scheduled game to sweep a Peach Belt Confer­ence series.

Jeff Rice homered and drove in three runs in the 4-2 win, then went 5 for 5 with three RBI and scored twice in the 7-2 victory. JD Sabo finished 3 for 5 with two runs for the Jaguars (16-22, 8-13) in the regularly-scheduled game.

Tyler Brown (4-1) and Frank Warren (4-4) earned wins.

• In Aiken, Patrick Grady and Erik Lunde drove in five runs each as No. 2 Lander pounded No. 14 USC Aiken 18-4.

Tyler Wilson added four RBI for the Bearcats (31-6, 18-6 Peach Belt Conference), who outhit the Pacers 21-5.

Sean Miller drove in two runs for USC Aiken (26-10, 13-8).

• In Atlanta, three pitchers combined on a seven-hit shutout and Daniel Spingola drove in the only run as Georgia Tech (19-13, 8-7) completed an Atlantic Coast Conference sweep of Duke (17-16, 7-8) with a 1-0 victory.

• In Columbia, Mo., Missouri (14-16,4-8) salvaged the final game of a Southeastern Conference series from Georgia (18-13-1, 5-6-1), defeating the Bulldogs 4-2.

• In Clemson, S.C., North Carolina State (18-12, 4-10) snapped a 10-game Atlantic Coast Conference losing streak with a 9-4 victory over Clemson (20-10, 9-4).

Pitcher fans 16 as Jaguars roll

Paige Deschaine struck out a career-high 16 as Georgia Regents blanked Georgia Southwestern 6-0 to cap a sweep of a doubleheader on Senior Day.

The Jaguars (19-30, 6-10 Peach Belt Conference) won the opener 3-2.

Mallory Ferguson hit a two-run homer in the opener. Haley Birkle got the complete-game win.

Hannah Vaughn homered and drove in two runs in the second game. Ferguson also had two RBI.

• In Aiken, USC Aiken swept a doubleheader from Francis Marion, 4-2 and 5-4.

India Kornegay struck out 11 in a complete-game victory in the opener. Sarah Montei homered and drove in two runs. Ashley Metts also homered.

Montei drove in two runs in the second game and Kaitlyn White scored three times for the Pacers (28-11, 11-5 Peach Belt Conference).

Kornegay got the win in relief, pitching three scoreless innings.


Petkovic claims Charleston title

In Charleston, S.C., Andrea Petkovic ended a surprising week at the Family Circle Cup by winning her first WTA tournament in three years, outlasting Jana Cepelova for a 7-5, 6-2 victory.

• In Geneva, Roger Federer cruised to a 7-6 (0), 6-2, 6-3 victory over Andrey Golubev in the decisive singles match to give Switzerland a 3-2 win over Kazakhstan in the Davis Cup and a spot in the semifinals.


Sermanni out as US head coach

U.S. Soccer fired coach Tom Sermanni hours after he was on the sideline for a 2-0 win against China on Sunday.

Sermanni took over the women’s program in January 2013.

• Liverpool reclaimed top spot in the Premier League after two penalties from captain Steven Gerrard helped his team beat West Ham 2-1 to remain firmly in the hunt for the club’s first league title since 1990.
