Lady Jaguars make school history in win over Paine

Augusta State women 63, Paine 44

The Augusta State Lady Jaguars built off a big halftime lead and cruised to school history on Thursday.

Augusta State led by double digits for much of the game, resulting in a 63-44 win over Paine in the first meeting between the two schools at Paine’s new HEAL Complex.

With the win, the Lady Jaguars set a program record for best start, improving to 13-2 and besting the start of the 2003-2004 Elite Eight team.

“It’s an accomplishment,” coach Nate Teymer said. “Until another team comes along, it can’t be taken away from these girls. But we have to stay focused. We want to have the best finish in ASU history.”

Augusta State also won its fifth consecutive game and is 5-2 in January. The Lady Jaguars won their third consecutive game against Paine and fourth in a row on Paine’s campus.

The Lady Jaguars were led by Tanchelle Hollingsworth’s 12 points and five assists. Tiffany Jaecks added 10 points for an offense that shot 35 percent, including 40 percent in the first half.

“Paine’s a fun environment to play in,” Jaecks said. “We got out early and were able to get a good win.”

Augusta State jumped to a double-digit lead with less than 5 minutes remaining in the first half, going on an 8-1 run at the 4:46 mark. The Lady Jaguars led Paine (8-10) by 15 at the 4:00 mark, and were up 39-22 at the half.

Augusta State grabbed its biggest lead at 57-30 with 9:30 to go in the game and was able to cruise from that point.

“The fact that we made shots early was big,” Teymer said. “We moved the ball well and fed off the dribble.”

Paine was led by Kiara Johnson’s 11 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks. Former Butler star Ashley Watts added 14 points. The loss was the Lady Lions’ second in their past eight games.
