BRAVES: Right-hander reliever Cristhian Martinez was put on the 15-day disabled list Friday because of a strained right shoulder, making room on the roster for recently acquired right-hander Luis Ayala.
Ayala joined the Braves in Washington ahead of Friday night’s game against the Nationals. Atlanta received the reliever in a trade that sent minor league left-hander Chris Jones to the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday.
Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said Martinez’s shoulder bothered him while warming up in the bullpen during Atlanta’s 8-0 victory at the Miami Marlins on Wednesday.
YANKEES: Pushed back Andy Pettitte’s next scheduled start a few days because the left-hander is experiencing back spasms.
The Yankees said Phil Hughes will start today against the Baltimore Orioles and Hiroki Kuroda will move back a day to get the ball in Pettitte’s place Sunday. Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Pettitte should be ready Tuesday or Wednesday.
INDIANS: Pitcher Carlos Carrasco was suspended for eight games by Major League Baseball on Friday for “intentionally throwing” at New York’s Kevin Youkilis, the right-hander’s second penalty in two years for aiming at a hitter.
Carrasco had just completed serving a five-game suspension for a fastball thrown at Kansas City’s Billy Butler in 2011 when he drilled Youkilis with a fastball in the fourth inning Tuesday, moments after giving up a two-run homer to Robinson Cano.
MLB officials appeared to take Carrasco’s history into account with the punishment, which included a $3,000 fine.
MARLINS: Right fielder Giancarlo Stanton was a late scratch from the Marlins lineup on Friday night with a sore left shoulder.
