Baseball exhibit to be shown on Augusta State campus starting Jan. 18.

Exhibit will go on display at Reese Library

Local baseball historians Lamar Garrard and Milledge Murray marveled at the baseball exhibit resting inside Reese Library.

The library, on the Augusta State campus of the new Georgia Regents University, obtained the “Pride and Passion: The African-American Baseball Experience,” a traveling exhibition.

The exhibit, free to the public, is a series of freestanding panels detailing highlights of African-Americans in baseball, from Jackie Robinson and Larry Doby to Satchel Paige.

“There’s a lot of information,” Murray said. “It’s a very complete timeline. It’s great.”

Garrard added: “I think this is a premier event for Augusta. This is a quality exhibit.”

The library will officially unveil the exhibit at 5:30 p.m., Jan. 18.

At the school’s University Hall (Room 170), a special segment of Ken Burns’ Baseball will be featured, followed by a panel discussion with guest speakers including former Negro League baseball players, Carl Long and Cliff Layton.

Chris Kane, of WJBF-Channel 6, will moderate the discussion. A reception and special preview of the exhibition will follow.

At 2 p.m. on Feb. 3, Kevin Faigle, of WRDW-Channel 12, will moderate a discussion with Garrard and Murray at the library.

Karen Aubrey D’Ambrogi, an assistant dean in the Pamplin College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, spent six months with library officials writing the grant to bring the exhibit to Augusta.

The traveling exhibition is based upon a permanent display at the Baseball Hall of Fame.

“We wanted this to be seen by a lot of people,” D’Ambrogi said. “We thought this would be important for the community.”
