Baseball notes

ROCKIES: Jamie Moyer has been designated for assignment, the move being made about six weeks after he became the oldest starting pitcher to win a game in major league history.

The 49-year-old Moyer said in a news conference Wednesday that he still had hopes of continuing his career elsewhere.

NATIONALS: Outfielder Michael Morse is expected to play in the field today for Single-A Potomac and might be in Washington on Friday for the start of a homestand.

METS: Placed Ronny Cedeno on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left calf.

The team recalled infielder Jordany Valdespin from Triple-A Buffalo.

RED SOX: Second baseman Dustin Pedroia remained out of the lineup with a right thumb injury.

Pedroia said after Tuesday’s win that an MRI revealed he had a slightly torn muscle in the thumb. He hoped rest would get him back quickly and he’d avoid the DL.

RANGERS: Roy Oswalt expects to be ready to join the team after four minor league starts. Oswalt is scheduled to make his first start for Triple-A Round Rock on Saturday.

TIGERS: Placed right-hander Doug Fister on the 15-day disabled list and promoted left-hander Casey Crosby.

ORIOLES: Outfielder Nick Markakis was held out of the lineup Wednesday with soreness in his right wrist.

INDIANS: Designated hitter Travis Hafner will have surgery on his right knee today and is expected to miss four to six weeks.
