League's leading hitter comes through in clutch to lift Tourists over GreenJackets

Asheville 7, Augusta 5

Asheville Tourists shortstop Rosell Herrera’s quiet series changed in an impactful way Monday night.

Herrera’s two-run double in the 11th inning led to a 7-5 win over the Augusta GreenJackets at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

The GreenJackets limited Herrera to two singles in the first two games of the series in Augusta, but the South Atlantic League’s leading hitter broke through with a double to right-center off reliever Mason McVay for the deciding runs.

Herrera, a switch-hitting shortstop, entered hitting a league-best .359 with 28 doubles and 15 home runs.

“He made a good adjustment,” GreenJackets manager Mike Goff said. “It was a fastball over the plate and he squared it up. It was a good piece of hitting.”

Augusta (14-14) entered the eighth inning with a two-run lead, but catcher Eliezer Zambrano allowed two passed balls that allowed two runs to score, tying the game at 5 and eventually sending it to extra innings.

Augusta starter Joe Biagini allowed three runs on six hits in seven innings, walking two and striking out nine. The right-hander induced 11 swinging strikes while tying a season high in strikeouts.

“He threw the ball well tonight,” Goff said. “He gave us seven solid innings and gave us a chance to win.”

Right fielders Derek Jones and Chuckie Jones exchanged two-run doubles in the second inning. GreenJackets second baseman Trevor Brown singled home a run in the third to take a 3-2 lead.

The Joneses again exchanged runs in the seventh on solo home runs for a 4-3 Augusta lead. Brown added an RBI double in the bottom half for a two-run lead.

Brown and Chuckie Jones combined for six hits and five RBI. The GreenJackets totaled five extra-base hits.

Derek Jones went 2 for 5 with a homer and three RBI for Asheville (13-16). Herrera had two hits and two RBI.
