GreenJackets drop Tourists after Martin Agosta's early exit

Augusta 3, Asheville 2

Returning from his second stint on the disabled list in less than a month, Augusta GreenJackets starter Martin Agosta faced more bad luck that led to an early exit Sunday.

Agosta allowed one hit through five-plus innings before getting pulled, and the GreenJackets beat the Asheville Tourists 3-2 at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

In his return start from the disabled list because of a blister on his right middle finger, Agosta was again pulled when the blister returned with one out in the sixth.

Manager Mike Goff said Agosta was scheduled for 70 pitches, and the blister forced his exit on the 70th pitch. He’s listed as day to day.

“He had no problems with the finger through 69 pitches,” Goff said. “On the 70th pitch, he threw a slider and the blister reocurred.”

The right-hander, who entered Sunday with four starts since the beginning of June, allowed just one single through 5⅓ innings.

An error resulted in Agosta’s only run allowed. He walked two and struck out five, inducing nine swinging strikes.

Augusta (14-13) scored the first run of the game in the first inning on an RBI single by Ben Turner. A two-base error resulted in the team’s second run in the third.

Asheville (12-16) scored in the fourth on a two-base error. Augusta responded with an RBI single by Alberto Robles in the sixth.

That run proved crucial as GreenJackets reliever Jorge Bucardo allowed three consecutive hits and a run to begin the ninth. The Tourists left the tying run on third to end the game.

GreenJackets third baseman Mitch Delfino went 2 for 3 with a double and walk and has two hits in each of his past three games, and a double in five consecutive games. Delfino reached twice against former California teammate and Tourists starter Matt Flemer.

“We’ve been going back and forth the last couple days, because I knew I was going to face him,” Delfino said. “When you know a guy three years and have seen him pitch three years, you know his stuff, so it’s definitely a plus at the plate.”

PLAY OF THE GAME: GreenJackets second baseman Alberto Robles singled home the eventual deciding run in the sixth.

STAR OF THE GAME: Augusta starter Martin Agosta allowed one unearned run on one hit in 5¹∕3 innings, striking out five.
