Augusta's Martin Agosta beats Lexington again

Augusta 2, Lexington 1

A rematch of opening night starters ended with a second pitching duel and another win for the Augusta GreenJackets.

Augusta’s Martin Agosta pitched six innings of one-hit ball en route to a 2-1 win over the Lexington Legends on Tuesday at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

After tossing five shutout innings against Lexington in the season opener April 5, the 2012 Giants second-round pick allowed one unearned run with four walks and seven strikeouts to earn his second win in consecutive starts vs. the Legends.

“He was doing a nice job establishing the inside part of the plate, especially to the big boys,” Augusta manager Mike Goff said. “You start going in there, you just open up the outside part of the plate, makes it that much more difficult to stay on the pitch. That’s one thing he did very well tonight. He got them thinking about the inside part of the plate, so it opened up the outside part and did a nice job.”

In those two starts against Lexington, Agosta has combined for 11 innings with five hits, one unearned run, four walks and 16 strikeouts.

“All week, we worked on just throwing fastballs to the glove,” Agosta said. “I struggled with command the last couple outings, so we worked harder this week and I felt better.”

Legends starter Bryan Brickhouse allowed two runs on six hits in six innings, walking one and striking out five.

Brickhouse tossed five innings in the season opener, allowing two unearned runs with seven strikeouts.

Augusta (8-4) scored in the first inning for the second consecutive game. Augusta went ahead for good in the third inning as a Matt Duffy triple set up an RBI single by Mitch Delfino on a grounder that inched past Raul Mondesi at shortstop. That put Augusta up 2-1.

Duffy and Delfino each had two hits and an RBI.

Brandon Farley pitched two scoreless innings in relief of Agosta, and Tyler Mizenko closed it out in the ninth for his fourth save.

PLAY OF THE GAME: Mitch Delfino’s RBI single in the third inning proved to be the deciding run for Augusta.

STAR OF THE GAME: The GreenJackets’ Martin Agosta allowed one unearned run on one hit over six innings for the win.
