When the Charleston RiverDogs come to Augusta this weekend, they’ll bring a New York Yankees infielder with them.
Casey McGehee, playing in his fifth season at the big league level, will join the RiverDogs in time for their four-game series this weekend at Lake Olmstead Stadium starting Friday. The final series of the season for both teams will run through Labor Day.
A statement released by the RiverDogs confirmed McGehee’s addition to the roster. The trip is not officially listed as a rehab assignment. McGehee is expected to remain with Charleston until big league rosters expand from 25 to 40 players on Sept. 1.
McGehee was a contender for the National League’s Rookie of the Year award in 2009 when he hit .301 with 20 doubles and 66 RBI in the first of three seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers.
The 29-year-old infielder started this season with the Pirates but was traded to the Yankees four weeks ago for reliever Chad Qualls.
