HOOVER, Ala. — Wes Rea’s three-run homer helped Mississippi State defeat Arkansas 9-1 on Tuesday in the opening round of the Southeastern Conference Tournament.
Rea’s home run, his fifth of the season, came in the second inning off Arkansas starter Ryne Stanek (6-4), who has
not won since beginning the season 6-0.
The Bulldogs (35-21) led 3-1 entering the ninth, then used two Arkansas (39-18) throwing errors and a passed ball to scored six unearned runs.
Brandon Woodruff (1-2) struck out five and allowed two hits over five innings to get the win.
KENTUCKY 2, MISSISSIPPI 0
A.J. Reed pitched 5⅔ scoreless innings and went 4 for 4 with a home run to lead Kentucky.
Reed (5-2) and Taylor Rogers combined to throw a seven-hitter.
The victory snapped a four-game losing streak for Kentucky (42-15).The loss was the fifth in a row for the Rebels (34-23).
FLORIDA 6, AUBURN 1
Justin Shafer had three RBI and Jonathon Crawford struck out nine as Florida (41-16) beat Auburn (30-27).
Crawford (5-2) and three relievers combined to pitch a three-hitter. After a leadoff single in the third by Bobby Andrews, the Tigers did not manage another hit until the ninth.
Shafer drove in two runs with a second-inning single off Auburn starter Jon Luke Jacobs (5-4).
