Dante's inferno
Web-posted 9/12/97
Rayvan Teague knew all along Dante Brown was different. No, maybe Brown never would post the kind of staggering numbers former Swainsboro great Derrick Young, the one many called the next Herschel Walker, did in the early 1990s. Maybe he wasn't blessed with quite as much raw ability as Sergio Washington, the former all-world, can't-miss Tigers quarterback from a few years back.

South Aiken coach Butch Nelson doesn't think Rico Bravo's supporting cast is as good as last year's, but Lakeside's passing attack has his undivided attention.

ARC-Josey rivalry continues without Starr
Web-posted 9/12/97
The rivalry between Richmond Academy and Josey may have a different flavor this year. The Musketeers are 1-0 for the first time in 10 years, following a 42-7 win over Greene-Taliaferro last week. Josey, which posted a 26-2 record the past two seasons, is 0-1 for the first time since 1993 after a 3-0 loss to Butler last week.

Web-posted 9/10/97
No more bus rides to home games for Greenbrier. The `Brierpatch' opened last Friday and the Wolfpack broke it in with a 30-0 victory over Hephzibah. The Wolfpack finally has a place to call their own after a year of playing their home schedule at Evans and Lakeside.

Burt Smith looks at what the junior varsity accomplished last season and doesn't understand how Butler's 3-0 win over Josey last Friday night could have taken anyone by surprise.

Augusta Christian backfield bring killer instinct to game
Web-posted 9/9/97
They don't look ferocious, they aren't physically intimidating and they don't talk smack. Don't let their appearance fool you. The Augusta Christian backfield duo of quarterback Nathan Duffie and tailback Brandon Colberg have the killer instinct on the field and have led the Lions to a 2-0 start.

Bailey sidelined for year
Web-posted 9/9/97
For Marc Bailey, a season that began with such promise lasted only one painful play. The Thomson senior halfback/cornerback, selected to The Augusta Chronicle's preseason Dream 16 team, will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a devastating knee injury on the Bulldogs' first play from scrimmage last Friday night in a season-opening 30-0 victory over Warren County.

Wagener-Salley Quarterback Ben Yon completed 17-of-26 passes for a school-record 301 yards and four touchdowns and no interceptions as Wagener-Salley upset perennial Class AA power Swansea, 28-24, on the road.
