Diggs digging different colors for Colts

In his five previous years coaching indoor football in Augusta, including three with the Stallions and the past two with the Spartans, you always could find Bubba Diggs donning his teams' colors in spiffy fashion.

So when the new organization, the Colts, announced it would be changing the team's look, Diggs saw it as an opportunity. He says he already has lined up some attire featuring the new colors: Navy blue, Texas orange and Vegas gold.

"Since I've been here, I've always pretty much worn black and red, so I look at this as an opportunity to expand my wardrobe," Diggs said this week.

The new team name, released in November, new colors and a new logo, which should be released soon, all are part of the transition from its old ownership and identity to a new ownership group.

According to a recent release from general manager John Sisson, the Colts are in the process of solidifying that new ownership group, which he indicated would be announced early next year.

The new front office is in place and already has begun negotiating with area businesses to become sponsors, investors or group fans.

The new front office also has completed the purchase of the American Indoor Football Association franchise rights from the Spartans ownership group and has assumed the Spartans' league standing in the AIFA.

Sisson said all league dues and services have been paid in full and in advance through October 2008 to "remove any doubt that the Augusta club will fulfill its league financial obligations for the 2008 season."

In addition, the Colts have completed an agreement to take over the Spartans' lease with the James Brown Arena through 2008.

While the look might be different, the team will retain many of its familiar faces.

That should be encouraging to fans, considering the Spartans won the World Indoor Football League championship earlier this year.

Diggs said Anthony Young, "Big John" Cratic, David Wright and Voncellies Allen are just a few players who have indicated they will return.

"I'm excited about the new opportunity," Diggs said.

This is the last call: The team will hold its last tryout in the area for interested players Jan. 12.
