Thoroughbreds win Class AAAA golf championship

GREENVILLE, S.C. — South Aiken claimed its second state title in four days, as the boys golf team won the South Carolina High School League Class AAAA championship on Tuesday at Furman University Golf Course.

On Saturday, the school’s boys tennis team defeated Dorman 4-2 in the Class AAAA final at Cayce Fitness and Tennis Center in Cayce, S.C.

The golf team, which began the final round nine shots behind Boiling Springs, shot 302 to finish the 54-hole tournament at 922, three strokes ahead of Boiling Springs, which closed with 314. Easley was third, another five back at 930.

South Aiken was led by Hayden Ploeger (71-80-74–225), who finished eighth and earned All-State honors. Other team members were Alex Handy (76-76-75–227), Ryan Carpenter (80-74-77–231) and Jake Carter (86-77-76–239).

In addition to Ploeger, Aiken’s Spencer Skiff (75-74-77–226) also earned All-State honors by tying for ninth.

Ashley Ridge’s Zak Butt won the individual title, shooting a final-round 69 to finish at 2-under-par 214, which was three strokes better than Riverside’s Jonathan Hardee
