Description

Did your property tax bill go up again this year? You’re not alone.

But look on the bright side: The taxes on your single-family home are nowhere near the seven-figure bills paid by several major companies in the metro Augusta area.

Utility providers such as Georgia Power and South Carolina Electric & Gas are among the largest taxpayers in the metro area’s three most populous counties, Aiken, Columbia and Richmond. They are joined by a host of capital-intensive manufacturers, such as fertilizer company PCS Nitrogen, tissue paper maker Kimberly-Clark and the John Deere Commercial Products tractor assembly plant.

The average U.S. single family home owner paid $3,121 in property taxes last year, according to ATTOM Data Solutions, a California company that maintains the nation’s largest real estate database.

In the metro Augusta area, where homes are generally less expensive and property tax rates are comparatively modest, homeowners pay much less. Aiken County’s average single-family home tax bill in 2016 was $542, about half that of Richmond County’s $1,192 and Columbia County’s $1,244.
