While U.S. troops overran the Cherbourg peninsula, British troops fought a holding battle between Caen and the Cerisy forest, typing up the German Armour and forcing the German Command to throw in their reserves piecemeal. As Cherbourg was falling the British struck hard south-west of Caen and drove a deep salient into the German lines towards the river Odon. Infantry advances behind a terrific artillery barrage and British Armour was able to exploit the gains of the infantry who squelched their way forward along lanes deep in mud.
