2013 Preakness Stakes Field

1 of 11
1. Orb
Odds: Even
Record, earnings: 8 races (5-wins, 0-place, 1-show); $2,335,850
Sire: Malibu Moon
Dam: Lady Liberty
Jockey: Joel Rosario
Trainer: Shug McGaughey
Owner: Stuart Janney III & Phipps Stable (“Dinny” Phipps)
Breeder: Stuart Janney III LLC & Phipps Stable
Comment: Small field and absence of 2nd, 3rd and 4th finishers in Derby works to McGaughey-trained colt’s advantage. Equally effective closer whether pace fast or slow. Can’t see Derby winner as anything other than tough to beat.

2. Goldencents
Odds: 8-1
Record, earnings: 7 races (4-wins, 1-place, 0-show); $1,250,000
Sire: Into Mischief
Dam: Golden Works
Jockey: Kevin Krigger
Trainer: Doug O’Neill
Owner: W.C. Racing, Dave Kenney & RAP Racing
Breeder: Rosecrest Farm & Karyn Pirrello
Comment: Trainer O’Neill shooting for two in a row at Pimlico. Colt’s race in Derby too bad to be true, so easiest drawn conclusion is that he couldn’t handle the off track. Expect him to be on the lead or just behind pacesetter. Believe he’s one at acceptable odds with a shot.

3. Titletown Five
Odds: 30-1
Record, earnings: 7 races (1-wins, 2-place, 1-show); $87,398
Sire: Tiznow
Dam: D’Wildcat Speed
Jockey: Julien Leparoux
Trainer: D. Wayne Lukas
Owner: Hornung, P., Martin, E., Lukas, D., Davis, W., Miller, D. and Shade, M.
Breeder: Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings, LLC
Comment: One of three from the Lukas barn and appears to be the least talented. Bred to handle classic distances, but form suggests otherwise. If only part owner Paul Hornung could, in his prime, carry the ball for this one.

4. Departing
Odds: 6-1
Record, earnings: 5 races (4-wins, 0-place, 1-show); $628,000
Sire: War Front
Dam: Leave
Jockey: Brian Hernandez Jr.
Trainer: Albert Stall Jr.
Owner: Claiborne Farm & Adele B. Dilschneider
Breeder: Claiborne Farm & Adele B. Dilschneider
Comment: Gelding grew up in same paddock as Orb at Claiborne Farm. Appears best of three newcomers not having contested Derby. Good chance to be closest to his former playmate at end.

5. Mylute
Odds: 5-1
Record, earnings: 10 races (2-wins, 3-place, 2-show); $477,695
Sire: Midnight Lute
Dam: Stage Shop
Jockey: Rosie Napravnik
Trainer: Tom Amoss
Owner: GoldMark Farm, LLC and Whisper Hills Farm
Breeder: Mike G. Rutherford
Comment: Fifth-place Derby finisher was beaten only two heads for third. Returns for talented trainer Amoss, with female jockey Rosie Napravnik again in the irons. Like Orb, appears best suited to dead closer running style. If the favorite stubs his toe, daisies painted to look like black-eyed susans could drape this colt’s neck.

6. Oxbow
Odds: 15-1
Record, earnings: 10 races (2-wins, 1-place, 1-show); $383,500
Sire: Awesome Again
Dam: Tizamazing
Jockey: Gary Stevens
Trainer: D. Wayne Lukas
Owner: Calumet Farm
Breeder: Colts Neck Stables LLC
Comment: Heavily-campaigned colt making sixth start of the year for Lukas, who seeks his sixth Preakness victory with three-pronged attack. Had highest mud mark in Derby, so suspicion is that off-track was his ally. Believe this colt due for a rest and expect him to regress.
8 of 11
7. Will Take Charge
Odds: 12-1
Record, earnings: 8 races (3-wins, 1-place, 0-show); $545,371
Sire: Unbridled’s Song
Dam: Take Charge Lady
Jockey: Mike Smith
Trainer: D. Wayne Lukas
Owner: Willis D. Horton
Breeder: Eaton
Comment: Third of Lukas triumvirate is a flashy colt of considerable substance with a runner’s pedigree. Was closing in the Derby stretch when impeded at three-sixteenth pole. Picks up capable rider in Mike Smith. Doubtful he will live up to his name, but must be considered a horse with a chance at a price.

8. Govenor Charlie
Odds: 12-1
Record, earnings: 3 races (2-wins, 1-place, 0-show); $444,800
Sire: Midnight Lute
Dam: Silverbulletway
Jockey: Martin Garcia
Trainer: Bob Baffert
Owner: Michael E. Pegram
Breeder: Michael E. Pegram
Comment: Pegram/Baffert tandem in pursuit of their third Preakness. Team is after this one with unseasoned colt. Won Sunland Derby in last start over unspectacular opposition. Dangerous to disregard Baffert at any time, but Charlie appears better suited to studying spelling than competing with this bunch.

9. Itsmyluckyday
Odds: 10-1
Record, earnings: 11 races (5-wins, 2-place, 1-show); $625,600
Sire: Lawyer Ron
Dam: Viva La Slew
Jockey: John Velazquez
Trainer: Eddie Plesa Jr.
Owner: Trilogy Stable & Laurie Plesa
Breeder: Liberation Farm & Brandywine Farm
Comment: It wasn’t two weeks ago at Churchill Downs. Able trainer has concluded that colt couldn’t handle the slop and has retained top reinsman John Velazquez to ride. Forecast calls for a fast track at Pimlico. If there’s a live longshot in this Preakness, he’s right here.

Kentucky Derby winner Orb goes for the second leg of the Triple Crown today in the Preakness. The Shug McGaughey-trained colt will face eight other horses, including three trained by D. Wayne Lukas. Orb drew the rail but is still the favorite. Coverage begins at 4:30 p.m. on NBC-Ch. 26.
