Augusta RiverHawks top Fayetteville in OT

Augusta RiverHawks 3, Fayetteville FireAntz 2 (OT)

In Fayetteville, N.C., the Augusta RiverHawks closed out the 2012 portion of their schedule with a 3-2 overtime victory over the Fayetteville FireAntz on Saturday night.

Ian Watters had two goals – including the game winner – as Augusta snapped a five-game losing streak.

Watters also had an assist for the RiverHawks (6-16-3), who knocked off the SPHL’s top team. Fayetteville is now 17-6-0.

Augusta’s Shawn Skelly scored with just under six minutes to play to tie it up at 2-2 and set up overtime. The goal was assisted by Watters and Alex Morton, who was playing in his first game for the RiverHawks.

Austin Lee, another newcomer, started in goal for the second consecutive game for the RiverHawks and stopped 31 of the 33 shots for the win.

Lee had allowed five goals in his debut on Friday, a 5-2 loss to Knoxville.

Augusta’s next game is Friday when the RiverHawks play host to Pensacola.

• Morton took the place on the RiverHawks roster of defenseman Ian Jensen, who was waived.

Augusta has struggled with defensive breakdowns recently, and Jensen became the second player waived this week following goalie BJ O’Brien’s departure Thursday.

Morton had 11 goals and 21 assists between Huntsville and Louisiana last season.
