The Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art is offering full and partial scholarships for its Summer Art Camp to children ages 5-11.


Anyone interested in applying for the scholarships, which are based on artistic merit and financial need, should contact the institute at (706) 722-5495 to request an application. Applications may also be picked up at the institute between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m.

The art camp features six weeks of weekly courses. Curriculum is designed to introduce students to a range of visual arts media. Classes are held Monday through Friday. For more information, call the institute at (706) 722-5495.


First Thursday will be held at Midtown Market, 2113 Kings Way, from 5 to 8 p.m. July 5.

Charmain Zimmerman Brackett will sign copies of her first book, The Key of Elyon. The featured artist is Leonard “Porkchop” Zimmerman, and the featured charity is the Storyland Theatre.

A 5K Run/Walk to benefit Aimee Copeland will be held June 30 at Savannah Rapids Pavilion. Cost to participate is $25, which includes a T-shirt and goody bag.

Participants also have the opportunity to bid on silent auction items, including dinner with Ryan Bowers from ABC’s Bachelorette.

Other auction items include gift baskets and certificates from area businesses. Proceeds will be used to help purchase a prosthetic leg for Aimee Copeland. A portion of the proceeds will also benefit LifeSkills for Women.

The Augusta Technical College Foundation has received a $5,000 grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, which awards grants to organizations in communities served by Dollar General.

The foundation will use the grants to fund scholarships to help deserving students pay for GED testing fees.
