Davidson senior wins trip to Grammy Jazz Camp

Ashley Levin envisions a career with music, and an upcoming trip to a unique camp could provide a huge boost to those goals.

“I’m going to go to school, but if an opportunity arises and I make the right connections, I will do that in a heartbeat,” said Levin, a senior at John S. Davidson Fine Arts Magnet School who is one of 30 students from across the nation to be selected to attend the 2012 Grammy Camp Jazz Session in February in Los Angeles.

Vocalists and musicians from 29 cities in 14 states will come together to form a jazz choir, combo and band the week before the Grammy Awards on Feb. 12. Levin is one of two sopranos in the eight-voice choir, according to a news release.

Levin has been singing as long as she can remember.

When she was younger, she, her two older sisters, Felicia and Alexandra, and her younger brother, Paul, would entertain each other and their family with their musical talents.

“We used to put on shows. It was an entire event,” she said.

At Davidson, Levin is the soloist for the jazz band and a member of the Davidson Chorale.

“I love jazz,” she said. “I like to do the improv and scat singing.”

Levin said she is honored to have been selected for the slot and has a lot of work ahead of her. Grammy Camp Jazz Session officials have sent her a packet with 10 songs for her to learn.

At some point between now and February, she will get an phone call and will be asked to sing random portions of the music on demand.

Levin said she plans to work closely with some of her music teachers at Davidson to make sure she’s on the right track.

Levin’s trip to the camp will make her eligible for some of the more than $2 million in college scholarships available through the Grammy Foundation’s partners: Berklee College of Music, Manhattan School of Music, the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music and Thornton School of Music at University of Southern California, the news release says.

Students will perform at several locations during the week, including Grammy In The Schools Live! – A Celebration of Music and Education on Feb. 8 at Southern California. The students will also attend the 54th Annual Grammy Awards on Feb. 12 and perform at the after-party.

They will record at Capitol Studios and Mastering in Hollywood. The recording will be available for purchase online at sites such as Amazon and iTunes, the news release says.
