Kettle contest


The Salvation Army of Augusta’s Red Kettle Season kicks off Thursday. From noon to 8 p.m. at the Washington Road Kroger at Alexander Drive, kettles representing the Bulldogs, Yellow Jackets, Eagles, Gamecocks and Tigers will be set up with fans of each team ringing bells to encourage donations. The team whose kettle receives the most donations by the end of the day will be declared the 2011 Kettle Kick-Off Champion. People are encouraged to drop by to support their favorite team.

The Salvation Army of Augusta’s Red Kettle Season runs until Dec. 24. To volunteer to be a bell ringer, call Katie Atkinson at (706) 826-7933.

Nativity Remix

The Black Nativity Remix, an original drama with music written by Paine College professor Don Cleary and senior Jennifer Branch, will be staged at 7:30 p.m. today and Friday in the Paine College Odeum. The production is an interesting interpretation of the timeless Nativity story. General admission tickets are $5. Call (404) 246-7032 for more information.

 Art exhibit

The opening reception for an exhibit of works by David Swanagin and Mike C. Berry is from 5-8 p.m. today at Sacred Heart Cultural Center, 1301 Greene St.

Swanagin is an oil painter specializing in mood-evoking landscapes. His most recent works capture the light of the Augusta area. Berry’s works consist of colorful and vibrant cityscapes.

The exhibit will remain on view through Dec. 31. The reception and exhibit are open to the public. Please enter through the gate at Ellis and 13th streets.

GOP meeting

Turkey calling

Rotary District 6920 is looking for a team of four non-Rotarians professionals between the ages of 25 and 40 to travel to Western Turkey. Applications will be accepted until Saturday. The team will depart May 2 and return June 1. Rotary International provides each team member with a round-trip plane ticket, and local Rotarians provide meals, lodging and travel within the host district.

DFCS furlough

The Richmond County Department of Family and Children Services on Fenwick Street will be closed Monday for a designated furlough day. Individuals who have appointments that day will have to call and reschedule at (706) 721-2536.

Charity gala

An evening of fine dining, music by Christian N. Ndeti and Nicholas “Nik P” Pettye, painting by visual artists and a silent auction will benefit Cycle for Freedom Inc. and Michelle’s Kids. The gala begins 5 p.m. Nov. 20 at the DoubleTree Hotel, 2651 Perimeter Parkway. Tickets are $50. Cycle for Freedom and Michelle’s Kids are committed to providing advocacy, education and HIV/AIDS prevention.
