Little League 9-10 group psyched up

Winning the District 6 championship last month is an example of what the Masters City Little League 9- and 10-year-old All Stars team can do, the players say.

Now they hope to keep the momentum going by bringing home the state championship.

"We got good players that can stop the ball, good outfielders," said team member AJ Gonzalez. "We have great hitters. I just think we have a strong team."

Teammate John Paul agreed.

"We're good because we work hard," he said. "We have good power hitting the balls and really good defense."

The team will travel to Griffin this weekend to compete in the state championship tournament along with the Masters City Little League's 11-year-old All Stars team, which won the District 6 championship for its age group.

The 9-and 10-year-old All Stars beat Baldwin County 19-14 to take the district title.

The players have been working individually and as a team, said Manuel Gonzalez, the head coach, adding that their dedication to the game has also been a key factor in their success.

"That's probably the most important part," he said. "When they love something, they'll give it their all, and these kids really love the game."

The team has been stepping up its game to prepare for this weekend's tournament, he said.

"It's going to be a lot of hard work," Gonzalez said. "We have to do the little things right as far as bunting the ball, moving runners over. And, you always need a little luck."

Other members of the team are: Ethan Scott, Terell Dent, Austin Mejias, Jacob Mejias, Savon Doolittle, Matthew Sumpter, Parish Farrow, Logan Howell, Taylor Sanders and Dalton Kessinger.

The assistant coaches are Doug Sumpter and Mike Paul.
