Golf tournament to meet special needs

Rhonda Clemens looks forward to hearing Andrea Slager tell her bowling scores on Sunday mornings at First United Methodist Church in Waynesboro, Ga.

Slager participates in the Exceptional Bowling League, a group for special-needs adults that was in danger of ending earlier this year because of a lack of funds.

Clemens wanted to do something about it after reading about the group's dilemma in an Augusta Chronicle article and talking with Slager's mother, Ruth, a coach for the league.

"I told her that I would try to find some companies that would help with the funding," she said.

She did, but she felt that wasn't enough. That's when she approached Lee Hammett, an LPGA pro, about the league's need.

Hammett told her that participants in the Special Olympics from Lynndale Inc. also were in need of funding. Lynndale is a nonprofit organization that provides programs for people with disabilities.

"Rhonda and I started talking, and we came to the conclusion we needed to do something to help make sure these groups have the funding they need to participate in these wonderful activities," Hammett said.

"That's how the golf tournament came about."

She and Clemens have organized the inaugural We Are Special Golf Tournament to benefit the Exceptional Bowling League and Special Olympics at Lynndale. It will be held June 5 at Waynesboro Country Club.

They would like to raise between $10,000 and $12,000.

"This is very feasible if we can get enough people to say yes they would play in it," Hammett said.

Participants will play scramble Lauderdale, and lunch will be provided.

A live auction will follow the golf tournament. Auction proceeds will benefit the groups.

Before tee time, three of the Special Olympics athletes will demonstrate their golf skills.

"It's a great opportunity for them to showcase their talent and for people to see who they're helping," Clemens said.
