Music adds freshness to 'Beauty and the Beast'

In its more-than-two-decade history, Storyland Theatre has performed Beauty and the Beast several times, but director Barbara Feldman always thought it was missing something.

"I decided it needed music," Feldman said, so she wrote the lyrics, and Susan Burgess added the music to give the show what it was lacking. "I love how it turned out."

With its newly added music, Beauty and the Beast will be performed at the Imperial Theatre beginning Tuesday morning. Shows will be at 9:30 and 10:45 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, Jan. 29. A matinee will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30.

Beth Blalock takes the stage in the role of Beauty in this variation of the Grimms Brothers' fairy tale.

"This is a beautiful show," said Blalock, who has performed in several Storyland Theatre productions.

She is returning to the stage after an extended absence following the births of her sons, John, 4, and William, 3. She said she's excited her sons will be in the audience for her return.

While the story line is similar to that made famous by the Disney film, Blalock said audiences shouldn't come expecting to see that version.

"There are no dancing tea sets, but the story stands by itself," she said. "The songs are beautiful."

Tickets for Beauty and the Beast are $4.50 for the weekday performances for school groups. Reservations are required for the weekday shows. The Jan. 30 matinee costs $5. Active-duty military and families will be admitted free to the Jan. 30 show. Reservations are not required for that day.
