Tree recycling


Augusta-Richmond County Solid Waste will recycle Christmas trees from Monday through Jan. 15.

Leave live trees at the curb on the first pickup day. Fake Christmas trees will be picked up as bulk waste on the second pickup day. Remove the decorations.

Live Christmas trees from any county may be taken to the landfill at 4330 Deans Bridge Road, Blythe, to be recycled at no charge.

Collecting shoes

Area podiatrists are collecting new and used shoes to be distributed to people in need.

Shoes may be taken to podiatrists' offices through Tuesday, Jan. 5. All types, sizes and conditions are needed.

Recruitment drive

An A.R. Johnson Health Science and Engineering Magnet School Recruitment and Open House will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 7, at the school at 1324 Laney-Walker Blvd.

It will include a tour of classrooms and will give potential students an opportunity to meet faculty members and staffers.

Applications to the school will be available and can be returned Jan. 4-29.

Filmmaker's talk

Mark Albertin, a multimedia producer for Morris Communications Co. and a filmmaker, will present a lecture on his film Displaced -- The Unexpected Fallout from the Cold War, as part of the Brown Bag History Series at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, at the Augusta Museum of History, 560 Reynolds St.

Mr. Albertin will explain collecting data and conducting interviews for his film.

Brown Bag History Series lectures are free to museum members and $3 for nonmembers. Participants should bring their own lunch. The museum provides beverages and dessert. Refreshments are served beginning at 11:30 a.m. The lecture runs from 12:30-1 p.m.

An Art Meets Fashion Extravaganza will begin at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, at the Marriott Hotel & Suites, 2 10th St.

The fundraiser is for the Paine College Art Club.

Veterans project

Augusta-Richmond County Historical Society seeks referral of World War II veterans as participants in the national Veterans History Project.

Volunteers can help in interviews in the area.

A DVD will be given to each veteran and sent to the Library of Congress in Washington.
