Chefs Showcase will aid students, Mini Theatre

The Augusta Mini Theatre will have its 8th annual Alumni and Friends Chefs Showcase on Sunday.

"This year is special because it's coming after our first full year in the new art school," said founder Tyrone Butler. "We had a great first year, and we've been able to add art and modern dance to our programs, which already included acting and piano classes."

The Augusta Mini Theatre moved to Deans Bridge Road last fall.

The showcase is held each October in recognition of the art school's anniversary. Today is the 34th.

This year's event will feature at least 25 restaurants and caterers from the area.

"The highlight is always our Parents Soul Food corner. It's the most popular," Mr. Butler said. "Just about anything you would consider to be soul food will be there."

Entertainment will be provided by local artists John Hobbs, Robert Reid and DJ Scorpio, he said.

"While people are eating and chatting, they are going to have great music in the background," he said. "They can also look forward to seeing the Mini Theatre students give a presentation as well."

Proceeds will go toward operating costs and book scholarships for former Augusta Mini Theatre students.

Twenty-five book scholarships are being provided.

The scholarships are given to college students who were with the theater for at least three years. They receive a $400 book scholarship each year for four years.

"By supporting this event, people are helping with the Mini Theatre's day-to-day operation costs, and they are investing in the lives of young people," Mr. Butler said.
