Every Tuesday, a group of women gather at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church to help others.
Our Redeemers Quilters create quilts for Lutheran World Relief, nursing homes, the church's baptized babies and area nonprofit organizations.
Last year, it distributed more than 160 quilts.
For three hours each Tuesday, the women take on different quilting tasks, working in something similar to an assembly line.
"It allows everyone to have a chance to choose what they want to do," said Ruth Reynolds, the group's leader. "We work together to get it done. We also have fun, but we still get a lot done."
"You feel good when you have dedicated time to do something for someone else," said Ruby Johnson. "These quilts are going to people who really need them, and it's our way of showing them that we care."
In addition to quilts, they help create shawls for the church's Prayer Shawl Ministry, said the Rev. Roger Schwartz.
"Everyone can say that they are praying for you, but when you have something you can touch, it's a physical expression of God's love and a constant reminder that someone is praying for you," he said.
They have distributed 74 shawls since the ministry began in August.
The combination of helping others and the group's camaraderie keeps Diane Strunk looking forward to Tuesdays.
"It's a fun group," she said. "You laugh, you talk, and you encourage one another. The quilts bring us together, but it's our friendship that keeps us together."
