A lot of 'Wedding' will be improvised

Augusta is invited to the theatrical wedding of the year as the Augusta Players Youth Theatre presents its version of a popular off-Broadway show.

"It's adapted from Tony 'N Tina's Wedding, which has been running since 1988 and is highly successful. That's based on a New York Italian wedding, which is good if you live in New York," said Brandon Brune, who directs Tommy and Gina's Wedding.

The play will be presented as dinner theater performance sat 7 p.m. Jan. 16 and 17 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church on Aumond Road.

Tommy and Gina's Wedding has a Southern twist, and Augustans might see similarities between the characters and their friends and family members, according to Mr. Brune.

Dalton Turner, a junior at John S. Davidson Fine Arts School who plays the groom, has drawn on people he knows to help develop his character.

"I hunt and fish. I relate it to the people from there," he said.

The show is unlike any other the teen actors have done.

"It's 90 percent improvised," Mr. Brune said.

The ceremony is scripted but the rest of the show involves the actors interacting with people in the audience as though they were guests at Tommy and Gina's reception.

"I've never done full improv," said Dalton, who added that the toughest part of the show would be staying true to his character for the entire performance.

"I think it's a great experience," said Davidson freshman Mackenzie Marr, who plays Gina. "There are no set lines. It's really different (than the usual plays) at school."

Mr. Brune thinks improvisation will help the young actors.

"I'm trying to get them to think outside the box," he said.

The performance will be catered by Sticky Fingers. There will be music and dancing during the reception.

Tickets are $15, and reservations are recommended. For more information, call the Augusta Players at (706) 826-4707.
