Service club holds event for soldiers

About 50 wounded soldiers are expected to be the guests of honor at the Fort Gordon Service Club's monthly luncheon Oct. 8 at the Gordon Club.

"We have some sponsors. If we got more sponsors, we could invite more wounded warriors," said Eva Proudfit, the club president.

The luncheon has a sports theme and guests are invited to wear their favorite team's colors. There will be sportsman's bingo and door prizes, she said.

Ms. Proudfit said having the luncheon was one way for the club to show support for soldiers.

The luncheon costs $13 and begins at 11:30 a.m. To sponsor a soldier for lunch, call Ms. Proudfit at (706) 863-3306.

Members of the Fort Gordon Service Club work, live or volunteer at the post. The club gives back to the community through scholarships and grants to health and human service organizations.

Its biggest fundraisers are the annual fall and spring flea markets and the Fort Gordon Thrift Store.

The fall flea market is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 18 at Barton Field.

Booth sales are held Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Fort Gordon Thrift Shop and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 11 at the Post Exchange.

Booths cost $25 and $45.

Funds from the sale of booth spaces go toward the scholarship and grants funds.
