Library patrons allowed to vote in photo contest

Jennie Feinberg was pleasantly overwhelmed.

Middle and high school students entered 68 photographs in the teen photography contest this year.

"We only had 13 last year," said Ms. Feinberg, the young adult librarian at the main branch of the library, 902 Greene St.

The deadline for entries was June 27; now it's up to library patrons to vote on their favorite photo.

"We have lots of nature photos, insects, animals, landscapes and lots of flowers. There are some more artistic ones. There are black and white and color. There are a few portraits as well. We usually don't get those," she said.

The photos are on display near the reference desk at the library.

"I had to improvise to display them this year," she said. "We didn't have enough flat cases."

Although she had originally said that patrons could vote on only one photograph, Ms. Feinberg has changed that rule slightly. Patrons may vote on as many of the photographs as they like, but they can cast only one ballot per photograph.

Voting ends on July 20, and the winners will be announced July 21. The top three vote-getters will receive gift cards from Borders. First place will receive a $30 gift card; second place $20; and third place $10.

Other events for middle and high school students this summer at the library on Broad Street include a belly dance performance at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 12, and a manga workshop from 1 to 3 p.m. July 23.

Registration is required for the manga workshop because it is so popular and spaces are limited, Ms. Feinberg said.
