Science academy plans moon, dawn walks

Herpetologist Mark Komoroski hands a green snake from the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory to a student during the Family Discovery Series at Phinizy Swamp.

The Southeastern Natural Sciences Academy will kick off its 2008 Family Discovery Series on Feb. 21 with a full-moon walk.

"It's a different time to be out at the nature park," said Ruth Mead, the senior education specialist. "Not many people get to see the park in the light of the full moon, so this is a great experience."

During the one-hour walk, families will have the opportunity to see and hear frogs, owls and other animals that are typically found around the swamp, she said.

The series allows people to learn things not usually taught by the academy, Ms. Mead said.

"It usually covers topics that are different from field trip activities that we do. The series lets us pick other topics that aren't our speciality but are related to what we do here," she said.

The academy will have a dawn walk Feb. 23 that is not a part of the series.

The walk will start at 5:30 a.m. and last between 11/2 and two hours.

"Even though it's really early, it tends to be the best walk of the year. We get out there at sunrise and we watch everything awaken," Ms. Mead said.
